Reynold Hemphill was born in raised in Detroit, Michigan, and reared in a Christian home. His father, Boyd Hemphill, was the musician at their local church and his mother, the Late Ella Mae Hemphill, was a District Missionary. Reynold along with two other brothers and sisters, were all gifted and developed the skills to play the organ, piano and sing in the church. Their talents have now flowed to a third generation of Hemphill musicians who are making an impact in the Gospel arena in Detroit.
Reynold began his musical career as a percussionist/drummer, having older siblings on the instruments at home and the church, did not afford him the opportunity to play the piano and organ as much. When the occasion arose, he was ready and accepted the challenge. He has studied under the Late Isaac Prince, the Late Rev. James Moore and Rev. Rudolph Stanfield. He traveled and performed as a Road Musician with: Evangelist Tessie Hill, the Late Rev. James Moore, Donnie Marks, Mack Alive Choir, Greater St. Matthews, New Providence Baptist Church, Bishop P.A. Brooks, Pure Hearts, all of Detroit, along with the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar, Detroit Chapter and the Eastern Michigan University Gospel Choir, Ypsilanti, Michigan, the Northeast Jurisdictional State Choir, (Assistant Minister of Music) and the Great Lakes Jurisdictional District Choir. He is married to Holli Campbell Hemphill for 20 years and they are the proud parents of Autumn (upcoming recording artist) and Reynold, Jr., a percussionist/drummer.
The Lord has blessed him with his own “Hemphill’s School of Music” out of the offices of Holy Trinity Institutional Church of God in Christ of 2140 Valley Street, Muskegon, Michigan 49444; 231-722-3219.
